Our World Today

We live in a society that is very cohesive, and in our modern age each and every individual will find himself tied up in certain respects with the uniformity of society. For example, no one today will be so primitive as to wash his clothes by hand instead of machine, or to go without a refrigerator and other electrical appliances and preserve his food in salt, and read at night by candlelight. Similarly, nobody today in society can communicate efficiently without the use of a telephone, and it is considered unlivable to be without running water.
In our world there is a constant wave of newer inventions and modifications that greatly enhance the progression of society in more convenient and efficient means. Wind-up clocks are by now old fashioned. Pocket calculators take no batteries anymore, they are all solar-powered. Yesterday's new up-to-date computers are hardly in use anymore. Written communication is done from one end of the world to the other in a matter of seconds through faxes and e-mail. In this respect we may see ourselves superior to the generations before us. We may wonder how only 100 years ago running water and electricity were considered luxuries hardly available to the public. Travel then was chiefly done by horse and buggy. Our world is certainly much more advanced than theirs!

GOING TO SCHOOL AGAIN!!

WHETHER or not Life has any definite purpose inherent in it, is something which is pondered to some extent by every normal human being sometime in the cycle, or rather, in that arc of the cycle which spans the time from "cradle to grave." It is possible only to a self-conscious -- a human being to thus ponder, if only for an instant. To the kingdoms below the man-stage, life is just to be lived, to be preserved at all hazards, and as long as may be. It is possible only for a human being to ask, "Why do I live?" "Why do I want to be comfortable?" "Why do I wish to preserve life as long as possible and at all hazards, even at the expense of my fellow creatures, man, or beast, or plant?"
So going to school again, with the definite object in view of finding answer to all of our questioning, is not such a painful process to contemplate when a possible result is considered -- the obtaining of knowledge of such a degree that the possessors of it will "never again fall into error." This would seem to be reward enough in itself. But there is still the greatest reward to be considered: the joy, the ability and the will to help others.

So let's go to school again!

El Niño Phenomenon

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) dispelled the public’s apprehension over the destructive effect of the El Niño phenomenon now felt in the country.

After last month’s floods, the Philippines is now bracing for drought because of El Niño. A looming water shortage will affect hydroelectric power stations and lead to cuts. Manila has already experienced serious blackouts and also in the other places.

Wide areas of the Philippines have been hit by power cuts caused by low river levels from the El Nino climate phenomenon.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines says the power generation deficiency is due to very low supply of water needed to run hydroelectric plants.

Rotating power outages are being experienced in areas in the Mindanao region in the south and Luzon island in the north.

Officials say the situation could get worse as the summer season peaks in coming months.

The Persons Behind the Maguindanao Massacre

Nine members of the powerful Ampatuan clan are considered suspects in the brutal murders of 57 people in Maguindanao province.

Aside from Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., the other suspects on the justice department's surveillance list are Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan, Nords Ampatuan, Maguindanao Acting Vice-Gov. Akmad Ampatuan, Datu Saudi Ampatuan Mayor Saudi Ampatuan Jr., Bahnarian Ampatuan, Sajid Islam Ampatuan, and Akmad Tato Ampatuan Sr.

"They are under investigation and under surveillance," the eight suspected Ampatuans not in custody. Immigration authorities had been alerted to prevent them from fleeing the country.

Maguindanao Massacre

The Maguindanao massacre, also known as the Ampatuan massacre (after the town where the mass graves were found), occurred on the morning of November 23, 2009, in the town of Ampatuan in Maguindanao province, on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The victims were about to file a certificate of candidacy for Esmael Mangudadatu, vice mayor of Buluan town. Mangudadatu was challenging Datu Unsay mayor Andal Ampatuan, Jr., son of the incumbent Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan, Sr., in the forthcoming Maguindanao gubernatorial election, part of the national elections in 2010. The 57 people killed included Mangudadatu's wife, his two sisters, journalists, lawyers, aides, and motorists who were witnesses or were mistakenly identified as part of the convoy.
